There are those who call Foz the Pearl of the Cantabrian, a qualifier that makes it enter into conflict with towns such as Biarritz, San Sebastián, Santander, Gijón or Ribadesella. The ‘culpa’ has a spectacular estuary formed by the Masma River and fifteen kilometers of beaches of fine white sand that have transformed this old whaling port into the tourist heart of A Mariña Lucense.
The Ría de Foz is a paradise for the observation of winter waterfowl, as well as for the practice of all kinds of water sports: surfing, kite, sailing … But, also, in a half-hour radius by car from the villa We can find many other attractions that will help you enjoy your stay at our hotel Oca Playa de Foz. Take note.
In the municipality of Foz:
1-Beaches. A Rapadoira is the most urban beach in Foz and is equipped with all services. It was the first to obtain the blue flag in Galicia in 1987. It is flanked by a promenade of more than four kilometers, which takes you to the extensive sandy area of Llas, less crowded. Another very long beach is Arealonga. But there are many more: Peizás, Cangas, Gralleira, Area Brava…
2-San Martiño de Mondoñedo. Surely you would never have imagined it but in Foz – five kilometers from the center in a beautiful rural setting – is the oldest cathedral in Spain. It was, in the sixth century, the first built in southern Europe. Pre-Romanesque style, it underwent subsequent modifications between the 10th and 13th centuries.
3-Castro de Fazouro. Dated between the 1st and 3rd centuries with strong Roman influence, it is the only one preserved on the Galician Cantabrian coast.
East of Foz:
4-As Catedrais. A must-see in the area is Augas Santas beach, also called As Catedrais because of the spectacular shapes carved on the rocks due to the erosion caused by the action of wind and water. Remember that to admire them you must go at low tide and that during Easter and summer you must reserve a visit time on this website of the Xunta.
5-Rinlo. This small town has managed to safeguard its marine essence. A tour of its promenade invites later to regain strength by eating a rice with lobster, not in vain is famous for both its cetareans and its rice paddy.
6-Ribadeo. The capital of A Mariña marks the limit with Asturias. Its historic center is Bien de Cultural Cultural (BIC) and in it we can admire buildings of various styles, ranging from the thirteenth century (convent of Santa Clara) to neoclassicism (Palace of the Marquis de Sargadelos) and modernism (the Indian Tower of the Moreno). Precisely deserves its own chapter the Indian neighborhood of San Roque and its typical mansions, ordered to be erected by emigrants returning from America. In July, the Indian Ribadeo is celebrated with its Havana festival. Safety pin.
South of Foz:
7-Lourenzá. Locality famous in Galicia for its beans and dominated by the Benedictine monastery of San Salvador. The baroque facade of his church served as an essay for that of the Cathedral of Santiago. We are, not in vain, on the Northern Way.
8-Mondoñedo. A little further south, the birthplace of Álvaro Cunqueiro deserves a leisurely visit because there are many complaints. We can quote from the historic center, chaired by the Cathedral, to the Jewish quarter or the Cova do Rei Cintolo, the largest in Galicia.
West of Foz:
9-Sargadelos. From Foz we must take the west direction to head towards Cervo, where we will find the factory of the renowned Galician ceramics of Sargadelos. The visit to the Historical Museum is free. You can also enjoy a recreational area and a small walk that runs parallel to a canal from the old factory. The current factory can be visited freely during working hours and sometimes organizes guided tours.
10-Viveiro. It is the third most populous town in the province of Lugo, behind the capital and Monforte de Lemos. Its beaches, its medieval historical center, the mountain of San Roque, the Souto da Retorta and its giant eucalyptus … There are many reasons to walk it calmly. Viveiro Holy Week has the declaration of International Tourist Interest and the Resurrection Fest is an essential event for lovers of hard rock. With these notes, you will surely have some idea of the reasons why Foz has become a pole of tourist attraction of the first order: nature, beaches, heritage, culture, tradition, gastronomy, parties and festivals … Our Hotel Oca Playa de Foz, just eighty meters from A Rapadoira, will allow you to enjoy them with all the comforts of a four-star establishment, to which a spa is added so that you have guaranteed both rest and well-being.
